The Dipper and the Three Wee Diels

First published in 1990, The Dipper and the Three Wee Diels brought together the poems and stories of Ayrshire writers Dr Jimmy Begg and the late John Reid MBE, with all proceeds donated to the newly opened Ayrshire Hospice. An incredible 3,000 copies were sold, raising £8,000 to support Hospice care.

Now, more than 30 years later, this newly expanded edition returns with an additional 100 pages of Dr Jimmy Begg’s later work. Written in the Ayrshire Scots of their childhood, the poems and tales celebrate the humour, people, and countryside of Ayrshire while helping to preserve the language as a living part of local culture.

Many of the poems have won prizes over the years, reflecting the warmth, wit, and storytelling that run throughout the collection.
